Mercedes-Benz will release an updated version of the G-Class off-roader with an internal combustion engine. This will coincide with the launch of the EQG electric off-roader next year.

In terms of design, almost nothing will change in the new off-roader model. According to Auto Bild, there will be at least one important technical innovation. We are talking about the CVSA2/Kinetic kinetic suspension from Tenneco. The off-roader will receive this system after the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster and AMG GT coupe. It has many advantages, but most importantly, it allows you to adjust the stiffness in an even wider range.

In addition to Mercedes-Benz, Rivian and McLaren also use a similar system. In the 750S supercar, it is part of the latest, third generation of Proactive Chassis Control adaptive chassis. The adaptive dampers in the CVSA2/Kinetic system have independent adjustment of compression and rebound levels. These are interconnected by hydraulic lines that act as a stability stabilizer. The pressure in the circuit, as a result, the stiffness of the suspension is regulated by special valves. Moreover, all this can be turned off to increase the articulation of the tires on offroad.

Another advantage of the kinetic system is improved traction. This is displayed to great effect on an off-road course, where the new G63 tackles tricky inclines and storms along sandy tracks with great authority.

According to the reviews of those who have already driven the G-Class prototype with kinetic suspension, the handling of the car has improved significantly. Body sway in sharp corners is reduced, dives are reduced during hard braking and overall comfort is increased. CVSA2/Kinetic will only be offered as an option for the top-of-the-line Mercedes-AMG G63. A new engine is also promised for the off-roader – a 4.0-liter eight-cylinder biturbo engine with a 48-volt EQ Boost starter-generator taken from the GLE 63 S 4Matic. The former develops 450kW and 850Nm with the latter offering up to 16KW and 250Nm. This compares to the 430kW and 850Nm of today’s G63.

While the G-Class’s off-road ability has never been in doubt, it appears the advanced underpinnings provide it with a further degree of ability away from the bitumen.
